City attorney George Oakes told council last night no report on the Barrett & Hilp protest about the municipal sewage plant contract. Protest filed July 16 alleging Barrett & Hilp had the low bid and that award to M&E may be improper. Next council meeting set for 8 p.m. July 31.
Joseph Laraoza Gasper 82, former gardener for Hayward Union High School District, died suddenly at 636 Third Street. A Portugal native and 22-year resident, he is survived by widow Mary Avilla Gasper, sister-in-law Ross Avilla, nieces Mary and Pauline Avilla of San Francisco, Eldee Avilla of Petaluma, and nephews in Teshajada, Portugal. Rosary at Hayward Mortuary Residence Chapel 8 p.m. Wednesday. funeral Mass at Saint’s Catholic Church Thursday 8:45 a.m.. interment Holy Cross Cemetery San Francisco. Floral tributes omitted per family request.
Hayward death of Walter Comella 25 in truck overturn on Fonthill boulevard leads to rites Thursday at Garden Chapel Pratt-Fliers mortuary 1044 C street with rosary at 8 pm and funeral at 9:30 am. Interment Golden Gate National Cemetery. Survived by widow son Robert Walter and father Bartley Comella.

The credentials committee acted to require state delegates to pledge support for the Democratic ticket for November ballots. Chair Calvin Rawlings led the session in Los Angeles as five Southern states prepared caucuses to decide whether to comply or risk removal, with leaders arguing state laws bar such pledges.
Funeral rites for Joseph J. Suciero 42 of 757 Myrtle Street Hayward who died yesterday will be held Thursday at All Saints Catholic Church with mass at 9 15. He was born in Portugal and lived in the community 35 years. Survived by widow Elizabeth, mother Candida, brothers Manuel Adriana Tingo Emily Crawford Alice Morsilli Anthony Sueirre Mary Mladvich and others. Interment in Holy Sepelcin cemetery with rosary at the funeral home tomorrow.
Mrs. Mary O Rodriques Lorenza 76 longtime San Lorenzo resident died yesterday in a Santa Cruz hospital after visiting the area for a week. She lived at 15287 Ashland Ave San Lorenzo widow of Ignacio Rodriques mother of Alience Hayward Violet Wade and Ignatius Rodriques. She was sister to Minnie C Smith Josephine Francis and Percy Oliviera. A charter member of SPRST Council No 9 San Lorenzo funeral rites pending at Sorensen Brothers chapel.
Armand A Turcott will manage Signature Loan Companys new Hayward office at 641 First Street in the Lucky shopping center. The first West Coast branch aims to capitalize on California growth, with Turcott bringing prior experience from Hartford and Marine service.
Castro Valley residents involved in parent-teacher groups and civil defense will gather for a briefing at 7:20 tonight in Castro Valley. The event is called by Alameda County Disaster Council chief warden Lt. George T. Wisner.
