President Nixon announced phased Phase IV measures lifting the food price freeze except for beef, predicting a substantial rise in grocery costs. advisers warned the increase will be felt immediately, with meat and other staple prices rising in the coming months and gradually leveling off in 1974.
United Auto Workers President Leonard Woodcock says new contracts for more than 700,000 Ford GM and Chrysler workers will meet government Phase IV guidelines with wage and fringe benefit hikes around 6 to 8 percent. He notes Phase II flexibility remains, while Phase IV limits and government influence worry the union about cost and pace of gains.
Phase 4 elements include lifting price freezes on food and health sectors immediately, with other sectors staying frozen until Aug 12. Wages retain a 5.5 percent guideline. exemptions apply to public utilities, lumber, plywood, and small businesses. Food allows increases only if raw input costs rise, and gas and fuel prices face Aug 12 ceilings. Rents stay excluded from the freeze.
UPI reports Frederick LaRue testified Magruder deputy director of Nixon's reelection campaign knew in advance of the June 17 1972 Watergate break in. LaRue said Magruder received a breakfast telephone call in Los Angeles about the arrests and noted last night was the night for the wiretap.
San Lorenzo resident Mikel Schnell, 21, was arrested by Alameda County deputies on warrants for three traffic violations after buying beer at a local store. A routine warrant check failed to reveal he had already paid a $4 fine and spent three days in Santa Rita jail, leading to a disputed sequence of arrests and an admission from the sheriff that the arrest was an error.
A PG&E outage cut power to a three-square mile area in Irvington yesterday, affecting 480 Carl Ave resident Mrs. Anna King who relies on electricity for breathing and medical devices. Crews repaired lines after a truck with a raised boom damaged a television cable, causing a pole crack and widespread outages. Power was restored to most customers by 6:20 p.m. after crews worked from 1:58 p.m. to 2:35 p.m. and beyond.
