Hayward Public Works Director Ed ward Phillips learned the hard way that trusting a chief of police’s advice can backfire when his 1964 Pontiac convertible was stolen from the city hall parking lot after he and Chief Claude Marchand attended Hayward Day at the Alameda County Fair. The theft occurred between 7:00 p.m. and 11:25 p.m. with security guards and building staff noting the lot’s routine surveillance. Phillips, who had left the car with the top up, had previously parked there without trouble. Police are still searching for the vehicle.
