John N. Mitchell says he rejected three extensive spying plans against Democrats last year while serving as attorney general. He admits not firing or arresting the men who proposed the actions and notes later regrets.
A tractor-trailer crash on Wiles Canyon Road at Palomares in Fremont left one person dead and two injured. The California Highway Patrol reported the crash occurred this morning and blocked the road as rescuers worked to free the truck driver from the overturned cab.
A federal grand jury in Los Angeles subpoenaed five major oil companies Standard Oil of California Atlantic Richfield Union Oil of California Shell Oil and Texaco for documents on gasoline prices and marketing. The inquiry, extending across California Oregon Arizona Washington and Nevada, also targets exchange agreements on refining and distribution.
