Rapist Suspect Nabbed On Tip In Joyce Carranza Case

Police in Santa Paula arrested Calvin R. Reed, 22, a packing house worker, on suspicion of murder and kidnapping in the strangling and rape of 12 year old Joyce Carranza. An anonymous tip led detectives to the suspect near Joyce’s last known location by Santa Paula High School and the Santa Clara River. Reed was detained after a five hour questioning at his home.

State Senate Winners OK'd by Secretary of State

Assistant Secretary of State Walter Stuller mailed certificates of nomination to state Senate winners despite a pending Los Angeles suit by Mayor Samuel Yorty. Yorty petitioned the state Supreme Court on June 26 to block certificates, seeking compliance with a June 15 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that state legislatures be apportioned by population. No court injunctions have been issued.

Convention Hall Nears Completion

SAN FRANCISCO AP The Cow Palace is rapidly transforming into a convention hall for the 1964 Republican ticket and home to a hockey team. A new electronic score board shows presidential votes as workers finish the platform area and seating. The convention opens Monday with Goldwater leading at 711 votes, Scranton 151, Rockefeller 2, Lodge 45, Nixon 3 and 176 uncommitted. total delegates 4,208.

Sequoia Brush Fire Contained Near Porterville

Sequoia National Forest and Tule River Indian Reservation fires totaled over 1190 acres. Firefighters from Angeles and Los Padres forests aided containment and road closures were in effect on Highway 78. A Kern River fire destroyed about 100 acres before containment. A 10 acre reserve fire at Oak Mountain prompted air support and is under control though terrain remains rugged.
