Labor Secretary James P. Mitchell announced that the 1955 business advance pushed employment to a record high with June unemployment the lowest in a year and a half. He cited factory overtime, May to June trends, and Eisenhower policies as factors behind the robust labor market.
Hayward city officials plan to meet with firemen and police on pay rise demands after approving a 2.5 percent average increase in the budget. Fire and police associations seek an additional 2.3 percent, with off-duty members expected to present their case led by Gerard Hatheway. Wages for top patrol and hosemen could rise from 418 to 427 dollars monthly, as comparisons show local peers paying around 425 to 426 dollars.

In San Lorenzo area negotiations between the Culinary Workers and Bartenders Alliance Local 823 and East Bay restaurant employers stretch into a seventh day. A 12:01 am strike deadline was temporarily suspended as unions and employers hold a final negotiation session at Villal Lorenzo. Wages remain a flash point with demands of 12 dollars daily for waitresses and 2 dollars for bartenders while current pay ranges from 7 to 16 dollars daily for various roles. Union officials say another meeting is possible if tonight’s talks fail to yield an agreement.
Oakland officials say a.master button stuck during a routine check caused 25 air raid sirens to sound briefly at 1 07 p m. H M Scott chief operator said the sirens stopped when he pulled a wire on the control system during the maintenance.
Los Angeles Governor Goodwin J. Knight warns California faces bankruptcy unless new revenues are raised. Speaking at a Kiwanis luncheon he says WWII and Korean War reserves will be spent by June and the remaining surplus exhausted by fall. He notes prior calls for higher whisky beer horse racing and a cigarette levy were not approved by the legislature.
Mrs Dos Seng 28 and her two children aided police by observing a getaway from a Castro Valley Bank of America robbery that netted 9380 dollars. She described switching cars at Strobridge Avenue underpass and provided license plate and suspect details to sheriffs deputies seconds after the incident. The Seng family also escorted their collie Huck to the vet during the pursuit.
Los Angeles detectives said a socialite Mrs Norma T McCauley was killed by her former houseboy John B Crocker Jr amid blackmail threats. Letters threaten intimate relations and note Crocker received money as motive. Crocker admitted the divorcee had given him $300 recently and had been generous.

Washington The House approved a 40 month extension of the government program to recruit Mexican laborers for U S farms and food processing plants. The program, under which 909,000 Mexicans were brought in last year, would be revised and extended to June 30, 1959. A last-ditch effort by opponents to kill the bill failed 123 to 48 as it was sent to the Agriculture Committee.
Sacramento area bus service returns to normal after a five day strike ended with an amicable agreement. The Gibson line, serving Sacramento suburban communities and the Sacramento Valley up to Chino, carries about 5000 daily commuters and travelers.
Hayward's new $2,301,386 budget for 1955-54 reflects growth with a $135,000 rise over last year.
