Airliner crashes in hailstorm kills seven near Rochester

A Martin 403 airliner carrying 40 passengers and crew of 3 crashed after a hail storm 80 miles from Rochester New York. Seven died including pilots and crew. 3 were injured and several others critically. The flight bound for Newark struck near Rochester Monroe County Airport, burst into flame, two sections breaking apart before firefighters fought the blaze. An investigation by Civil Aviation authorities began.

Sonic Boom Helps Woman Regain Speech At German Hospital

In Friedrichshafen Germany a jet fighter caused a sonic boom near the hospital. A 1 year old boy and several hospital staff were cited as witnesses as a patient reportedly regained her voice after the blast. Passengers and officials described the chaotic scene and injuries from the crash involving Mohawk Airlines.

Open California primary urged to decide GOP nominee

California GOP leader Joseph C. Shell backed an open presidential primary to let voters hammer out the party's choice. He argued an uninstructed delegation would be weaker than a yes primary fight, favoring Barry Goldwater if he runs, and warned a bare delegation could hurt the state at the convention. At the same time, leaders warned a bloody primary could fracture the party.

Suspect In Sniper Case Faces Court

Jackson AP Byran de La Reck reports a 42 year old suspect faces arraignment on murder charges in the sniper slaying of NAACP leader Medgar Evers. A Hinds County grand jury returned the indictment Tuesday. Beckwith, a Marine veteran, is held without bail. Dist. Atty Will Waller may seek the death penalty. Evers was shot June 12 as he stepped from his car. Meanwhile Charles Evers, successor as NAACP leader, says he has received death threats from an anonymous caller.
