Austria protests after Hungarian border guards fire on refugees
The Austrian government denounced an invasion by armed Communist Hungarian border guards who crossed the border near Nikitsch and opened fire on 20 refugees. Neighbor Saves Teenagers in Fire
Amalott neighbor was credited with saving several San Leandro teenagers from possible suffocation Saturday when she rushed in to warn them their house was on fire. The blaze caused about 2500 in damage and destroyed the contents of a front bedroom at 394 First Ave the home of Mr and Mrs Carl W Stone. The Stones six children were watching television and unaware smoke shrouded the avenue. Firemen said they investigate the cause possibly matches or a cigarette. Two firemen suffered cuts bringing the blaze under control. Linda Stone 13 said she had extinguished other small fires earlier in the day. Minor damage from a small dressing room fire at the rear of Hayward High School auditorium. Damage confined to subflooring and walls. Hayward firemen believe the fire was caused by gas leaking into the building from the street.
