Indira Gandhi, daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, was elected to be India's next prime minister becoming the first woman to head a major nation's government. She secured 355 votes to 169 for Morarji Desai as Parliament cheered the Nehru family's return to leadership.
Guerrillas attacked a refugee settlement near Tam Ky, killing 33 and wounding 54 as they swept the camp at dawn. The assault also hit the Quang Tin provincial headquarters with mortar fire and rifle attacks, while U S planners push for intensified action in Viet Nam.
SACRAMENTO (UPS) Lt Gov Glenn M Anderson formally announced a bid for a third term warning voters against electing amateurs to high state office. Anderson 52, was the second statewide incumbent to declare candidacy, with Controller Alan Cranston also 52 entering the race Tuesday. The two teamed ticket drew national notice after last August he called out the National Guard to quell riots in Los Angeles walls area.
Hayward City Council urged Bay Area Rapid Transit District to ensure construction of the full subway project in Oakland and cast doubt on accepting a $41.5 million bid for the downtown Oakland line while fearing funding gaps. Alameda supervisors pressed for award of two major downtown contracts even as costs exceed estimates, risking South County portions.
Hayward's two planned Bay Area Rapid Transit stations will be discussed at 8 am Thursday by the Hayward City Chamber's Rapid Transit Committee. The Doric Motor Hotel hosts the meeting. District proposes Hayward Station for the downtown facility and South Hayward Station for the second Hayward segment, both beside the Western Pacific Railroad tracks.
A tanker carrying 2000 gallons of lacquer thinner overturned beneath the Jackson Street overpass after its brakes failed. Driver Herbert J. Britt, 36, escaped unharmed as police sealed the area and chemical engineers moved to assess the hazard near the San Mateo Bridge on ramp to the Nimitz Freeway.
Kenneth Steadman former Fremont city councilman and area governor of the United Republicans of Tealifornia says he will run for a newly created two year seat in the 1th District. In Oakland Larry Leon investment company president also announces a campaign for the 8th District seat now held by John Holmdahl. Steadman attacks Democratic leadership calling for reform in property assessment UC Board of Regents powers and a new code of conduct.
President Johnson sent a letter to Speaker McCormack requesting a second supplemental defense budget of 12 billion dollars to finance the Vietnam war. The plan would add about 113000 troops to the Army and Marines and increase civilian personnel by 94000, with most forces deployed to Southeast Asia. The president said the move is needed to support allies and fighting forces until aggression ends and a peaceable settlement is possible.
A private single engine Beech Bonanza crashed shortly after takeoff from Reno Municipal Airport at 1 12 a.m. en route to San Jose. The wreckage lay near Idlewild Park in a vacant lot by a housing development. FAA identified the pilot as J Horton of Bountiful Utah. Passengers unnamed. Witness said engine trouble preceded a steep descent.
