Northwest Ice and Rain Paralyze Pacific Northwest Travel
Severe sleet and freezing rain coated northwestern Oregon and southwestern Washington, with icy highways closing roads and delaying trains and air travel. A warm Hawaiian air mass kept some coastal areas above freezing, while blizzard conditions and strong winds battered the Columbia Gorge and parts of Oregon and California. An ice jam threatened homes near The Dalles as crews worked to relieve flooding. In Maynard, a bank hold up ended with the suspect captured after a chase, yielding about $40. Police reported a complex sequence of robberies and a getaway through a beauty salon patio, as the suspect confessed to prior robberies and a San Francisco hotel stay.
