Hotel Tuller Fire Kills Four In Detroit Elevators

DETROIT UP I Fire traced to a hat shop off the Hotel Tuller lobby trapped guests on elevators. Four dead as smoke thickened, with about 250 to 300 guests and 300 employees evacuated. Police and arson unit worked to identify victims while staff aided in evacuations and rescue efforts.

Bandits Flee After Failed Robbery At Local Store

Edward Mican, a clerk at Jackson Party Service on MisFion Boulevard, reported two masked men entered about 10 30 p m. One forced a knife to his back while the other approached the candy counter and demanded money. Mican ordered them to leave, they fled without taking anything.

Crash Victims Improve After Bakersfield Accident

Two youths survived the Sunday crash that killed Manuel Grandha and Gene Gisler in Tayward. Larry Apodaca, 14, Hayward, was listed in good condition and to receive a California skin graft after eye-saving plans. Charles Joseph, 16, Tayward, remained in very satisfactory condition in Eden Hospital.

Elderly Women Struck by Car in Crosswalk

Two elderly women named Mrs. Viala Nye and Mrs. Marguerite Walford were struck while crossing Lewelling Boulevard at Meekland Avenue. Nye, 78, suffered a head injury and serious lacerations and was at Quik Knoll Naval Hospital in poor condition. Walford, 80, was reported in fair condition at Highland Hospital with a possible broken right arm. A personal injury settlement of 210000 was announced from the U S government for Robert Alford a Navy man and his wife Hilda Alford in Alameda after a July 21 1937 traffic collision with a Coast Guard vehicle. FBI Enters Crime Hunt for California Car Wash Boss

FBI joined a statewide chase after Clydi J. Briedlander, a California car wash manager, was charged with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. He allegedly shot Lawrence Royal during a day’s opening at Foothill and Matlo car wash, leaving Royal in critical condition after surgery for a partially severed liver. Royal is a San Leandro contractor.
