San Lorenzo air horn drill last Friday night alarmed residents yet proved effective for civil defense and fire protection. Fire Chief Tom Ducey said the test, timed after 11 pm, aimed to verify the alarm system’s adequacy for air raid and fire alerts, while some homeowners urged restraint due to noise.
Ernie Selmeczki was named president of the Castro Valley Firemen's club at the recent election meeting held at the fire house. Bud Valencia elected vice president, Douglas Miller second vice president, John Livingston recording secretary, John Humbert corresponding secretary, John Andersen financial secretary and Lawrence Gerke treasurer. Hayward Lions will meet tomorrow at noon to hear a talk on Salesmanship. Speaker will be Fred Enderlin, sales promotion manager for the Chevrolet division of General Motors in the Oakland zone. Frank Bowman is program chairman for the day.
The Martinez Gazette will cease its Saturday issue due to newsprint shortages and high labor costs. Publisher says the six day schedule remains, with Daily Review raising prices slightly and continuing six day publication. Review shows 50 papers raised rates in the two weeks after December 23.
The Iayward Area Chamber of Commerce new industries committee will hold its first meeting of the year at 365 Castro Street on Friday at noon. Cyril Reche, chairman, announced the event.
