Two men died in an early morning collision in Oakland involving a train and a car. The victims include Santiago Mais and Lorenyd, both residents of San Emery, leaving eight children orphaned. Authorities reported the crash occurred around dawn, with investigators examining the scene for causes and safety factors.

The Daily Review reports Eden Hospital owes about 435000 while holding roughly 34000 in the bank. Acting Administrator Harvey Long asked board president Paul Rhodes to call an emergency session, but no decision was made. A 5 pm Thursday review will address the crisis, with the board seeking legal advice on borrowing to cover payables. The hospital shows 527000 in patient accounts receivable, yet that is not readily usable to pay bills. About 44000 of the debt is from delinquent November taxes, with a further 24000 due for Te. A newborn girl abducted from a hospital nursery ten days ago was found alive in a Brooklyn mansion. The suspect, mother of eight, Jean Tavarone, 43, claimed the infant as her own, while the infant’s father Frank Chionehio identified the baby by a facial scar. Police traced the suspect to a shared apartment and arrested her as the baby’s case moved toward kidnapping charges.
Voters in Algarady and Devoto head to polls from 7 am to 7 pm to decide on incorporation of Union City and to elect a city council for eight square miles. Fourteen candidates, including Leo Alvelais and Osval dove, vie for council seats as debates and promotion of a 43 cent tax rate clash with opposition to annexations. Poll sites listed at Alvarado, Decato five stations, Bamard School, Whipple Rd, and Devoto School.
A broad coalition of Republicans and Democrats blocked a liberal bid to ease the antifilibuster rule in the Senate. The measure failed 67 to 28 as Sen. Paul H. Douglas and allies sought a 50 vote majority to cut off debate, but a two-thirds 60 votes were required.
A Hayward boy remains in very critical condition at Eden Hospital after a fiery highway crash that killed Manuel Graneda and Gene Gisler, both 14, with injuries to Durns on his face and a large number of companions. The crash near Bakersfield involved 20 vehicles, began when a tanker truck carrying butane gas tipped over, and a subsequent explosion sprayed gasoline as responders and others were still on scene.
The Nationalist China Central News Agency reports from Hong Kong that more than 1000 people have died of exposure in Communist communes in North China. The dispatch cites unidentified sources and notes a news blackout may deepen public resentment against the commune system.
