The National Safety Council projected a 102hour New Year holiday toll of 390 traffic deaths, with 54 confirmed by noon since the holiday began. Pennsylvania led with six fatalities. Wisconsin and Michigan had five each, Illinois and Minnesota four.
A quiet New Year's Eve in South County ended with the death of 27 year old Galen Lanck of Stockton when his car left Pleasant Ton Sundl Road two miles south of Verona Road and struck a tree at 10 30 p m. No skid marks suggested loss of control. Another injury occurred when Barbara Suel Poyér 21 of Freemont was involved in a collision with a parked car on Meckland Avenue near Hood Street. Poyér was cited for speeding. CHP and local officers issued 38 moving citations as they patrolled a subdued night.
Washington reports that the 10 percent tax on admission to entertainment ends, but most theaters plan to maintain prices. US officials say the tax cost about 21 million annually, and theater managers expect to pocket savings rather than pass them to customers. The Motion Picture Association notes few tickets exceed $1, so many fares stay unchanged.
A 75 year old resident, Charles Fillot, suffered burns covering about six percent of his body when a cigarette ignited bedding at Barrett Rest Home in Hayward. Attendants smothered flames with blankets, and he was taken to Highland Hospital in serious condition but was reported holding his own.

An explosion at a Navy plant in Indian Head Maryland that processes powder for solid rocket fuel killed two workers and injured two others on a Wednesday night. The facility said the blast occurred during routine operations and investigators were securing the scene.

The Topanga blaze blackened 25 miles of canyon as arson was suspected at Topanga and Benedict Canyon fire fronts.
In San Leandro an obedient employee rushed to obey orders and drove ahead injuring foreman Michael P. Evovich. The incident occurred near 158th Ave and Estaben. Evovich, 61, of Castro Valley, sustained a broken right leg and is listed in stable condition at Oakland's Merris Hospital.

Berlin dispatch says Defense Minister Willy Stoph and Interior Minister Karl Maron ordered the armed forces to be ready to act against imperialist aggression. London dispatches report Soviet diplomat plans show Anastas Mikoyan will press for a personal meeting between Premier Khrushchev and President Eisenhower next spring. He also aims to sound out prospects for a heads of state summit and to discuss a possible peace plan beyond the current East West crisis, including Berlin.
In Rochester New York six people died in early morning fire at a combined grocery store and apartment building. Four residents escaped as flames broke out in a third floor apartment. The deceased include Ralph Benedict 25 his wife Mary 21 and their two children Rosemary 2 and Anette five months old and Mrs Joyce McDonald 21 and her five months old son Steven. The Benedics were visiting friends when the fire began. Mrs McDonald and her son occupied an adjoining unit. James McDonald escaped with others.
