A turf fan at Santa Anita discovered he was overpaid by 97.50 dollars for Feb 5 winnings. On his next visit, track officials checked the Feb 5 records and confirmed the deficit. He returned the extra 87.50, leaving officials speechless.
French Premier Guy Mollet urged forming an African community to confront communist influence and grant African peoples freedom. He linked this step to France’s territories joining the six nation European common market. Mollet spoke in New York after a Washington trip with President Eisenhower and planned talks with Dag Hammarskjold at the UN.
A 12 year old girl pulled two five year old boys from a deep irrigation ditch near Russell Park in Irvington. Charles Russell developer ordered the ditch pumped and a six foot fence erected after the near tragedy. Rita Rippee an Irvington School eighth grader acted to save Dennis and Jimmy as bystanders and adults arrived. Master Sgt L E Stastny and Kenneth Reitz helped pull the boys to safety.
A Portland gambler testified before the Senate Labor Rackets Committee that Teamsters union agents pressured tavern owners to use only Teamsters stamped pinball machines, with picket lines used to block noncompliant locations. He cited estimated profits of about 250000 per year and described union officials as enforcing closures and political pressure. The testimony also named Frank Malloy as a strong arm figure and noted a Fifth Amendment invocation by a non-union pinball operator connected to the Mt Hood case.
Two large trucks overturned in a freak morning crash on Highway 17 near Landing Road Bremont. A southbound Holly Sugar Co. truck flipped onto its side and struck a pole, knocking down power lines. A van driver swerved to avoid the first crash and also overturned. No injuries reported for Gonzalo or David Rodriguez.
President Eisenhower told Defense Secretary Charles E Wilson that his persistent cough seems to come from down in his lungs while waiting in Wilson's office. He was there to receive medals of merit for Dr Arthur Flemming retiring head of defense mobilization and Gordon Gray his successor.
Two Brisbane robbery suspects, Frederick R. Thomas and David Johnson, were captured after a high speed pursuit across the San Mateo Bridge area. Deputies fired at the fleeing car as it sped along Dunn Ave, stopping near the Southern Pacific railroad crossing. Johnson was found with a whiskey bottle and $105.38 in his pockets. both men were booked on auto theft charges at Hayward police. The stolen car belonged to David T. Andrade of San Leandro.
Mrs Gaye Waldo OConnell 52 prominent local business and clubwoman died yesterday at Eden Hospital Castro Valley after a short illness. Survived by husband Charles and three sons Dennis Michael Terrance Eugene in Castro Valley and Charles Waldo OConnell of Los Pitas. They ran a wholesale candy business at 20095 Redwood Rd. She belonged to BPW International Castro Valley chapter Hayward Zontal Club Castro Valley Democratic Club and Castro Valley Methodist Church. Funeral services Saturday at 1 pm from Soren Ros Chapel 1140 B St Hayward. Interment Lone Tree Cemetery
Navy confirms pilot Leandran died in a fighter jet crash near Manila. Details identify Sal Leandro, 41, of Collier Drive, as the deceased, with the crash investigation continuing and inventories of the boarded unit pending.
San Leandro patrolman intervened as two armed robbers menaced service station attendant Charles Anema at about 11 p.m. near 1200 Broadway Street. The assailants debated killing or wounding him. officers passing by disrupted the hold up, gun visible through a door keyhole, and the robbers fled after grabbing cash. Anema, 28, lives at 7741 Barrier, San Leandro.
In London the royal couple enjoyed a humor filled night as Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip attended the Drop of a Hat revue at the Fortune Theatre. Princess Margaret joined them for the outing as the royal pair jokingly sang about mud and cooling the blood.
An 1800-pound female pilot whale captured off Catalina Island was brought ashore at Marineland Palos Verdes. Marineland plans to train the whale in an outdoor tank and let her interact with porpoises as staff search for a suitable mate to join her in residence.

Hollywood private detective Fred Otash testified to a California Senate committee that Scandal Magazine items about Jeff Chandler, Gloria DeHaven, and Marilyn Monroe originated in private files. He said Ruditsky stole material from his office and planned to publish in a New York expose magazine. Otash, a former LAPD officer, has investigated hundreds of stories for Confidential and Whisper magazines.
NICOSIA three Cypriot youths were sentenced to death today by British authorities for possessing arms and ammunition. The condemned are Nicos Joannou 23 Andreas Kokkinis 23 and Christos Apostelou 18 the eighth death sentence in February and the eighteenth since emergency law was imposed to quell the Greek Cypriot revolt.
