Officials promote a contract between teens and parents to prevent drunk driving. The program urges teens to call for a ride when intoxicated and parents to provide safe transportation, backed by a free booklet from national safety groups.
Fremont City Councilman Leon Moretti joined 89 others in a one mile wheel a thon from city hall to the Hub shopping center to raise 200 for the California Association of the Physically Handicapped. Moretti led the pack amid sloped streets and slick mall floors before a certificate of appreciation was presented.
Newark council, acting as the city personnel board, upheld the Oct. 4 firing of Anthony Nelson by City Manager Richard Turnlund after reviewing transcripts from January hearings. The board directed city attorney Garcia to prepare findings for a March 4 meeting. Nelson's attorney intends to take the case to court for reinstatement. Nelson cited subordination and a $340 monthly pay cut amid a $2,400 base. Turnlund said he is pleased but aware a scar remains.
UPI reports the Armed Forces Journal details a 1968 farewell hoax at Pope Air Force Base in North Carolina. Lyndon Johnson allegedly watched troops depart for Vietnam with emotion, while the wrong units were honored amid a substituted goodbye beer bust. the incident sparked anger among battle weary GIs and sparked political tension.
A 10 year old boy Leon President drew national attention last September when he tracked down members of a juvenile burglary ring. He refused a bribe and captured one culprit with a determined, detective like finale. City officials praised him and the police chief called him a good example. The Police Commission honored him with a scroll and presented him with real handcuffs to replace the toy cuffs he used. His mother said she is proud yet plans to move him to another town amid death threats from school mates.
Patricia Hearst defense drops plan to present lie detector results after Bailey says introducing polygraph evidence would waive her Fifth Amendment rights. Jury troubles erupt as Helen Westin faints near the door, court pauses, then resumes with Bailey forecasting a day and a half to rest the case.
California State University Hayward students face new rules requiring demonstration of acceptable writing by junior year or risk barred admission to senior courses and degrees. Freshmen may also be required to complete a full year of English coursework above remedial level.
Washington dispatch says President Ford’s February 17 news conference on CIA reform began at 8 AM EST but a television adviser cited a late suggestion as impractical. The remark triggered questions about why the White House forewent a more forceful approach and whether more leverage could have been used.
