In Mountairy North Carolina a nine year old crippled boy named Larry Adams died in a fire at Plat Rock Elementary school as 400 fleeing students escaped. One fire truck arrived late. no hydrants nearby left firefighters overmatched. Principal A P Phillips and teachers Beasley and Washer are credited with heroic acts that saved many children as smoke and flames trapped others.
Gov. Marvin Griffin praised the Georgia Legislature as it failed for a fifth straight time to pass an administration sponsored bill aiming to segregate entertainment, notably professional baseball. In Eugene Oregon a two hour gun battle ends with one officer killed and two wounded. State policeman Cl Jes Sanders died from a heart shot while Kann Wachsmuth 66 and Deputy Sheriff David Hefner were wounded as officers fired tear gas to flush the berserk man from a Wachsmuth residence on a quiet residential street.
In Seoul a US Air Force C 122 Globemaster crashed into the Yangtze estuary area amid dangerous tides and darkness. Five dead, 34 injured, 103 released after treatment. A transport with 149 service members aboard struck a sand spit island and burned. rescue halted as high tides and ice impeded recovery.
SAN LEANDRO Judy Buoniccorsi a Bishop O'Dowd High School senior won the national Vanner of Democracy contest from 7600 California entrants. She spoke in Washington before Sen John Kennedy and three co winners, winning a trip to Washington a $500 college scholarship and a gold recording of her speech.

A large low pressure system from the Mexican to Canadian border brings strong winds and heavy rain to the Bay Area. Fifteen to seventeen injuries are reported as slick roads and falls disrupt power lines and telephone service. Forecasters warn another storm could arrive tomorrow with gusts and more rainfall across Marin, Mendocino, and San Francisco.

SAN FRANCISCO Joseph Walsh 47 of San Francisco and two survivors from a Bayshore freeway crash died yesterday at San Francisco Hospital. Walsh was fatally injured when his speeding car crossed a dividing strip just north of Ramy Street and collided head on with a San Leandro car. Mrs Belen HeSiiva 59 of 493 Parrott Street San Leandro was then reported in critical condition in San Francisco Hospital.
Washington dispatch: President Eisenhower arranged delivery of a new miracle drug named mycostation to President Theodor Heuss of West Germany. The medicine, obtained from Naval Hospital St Albans in New York, was flown yesterday aboard a Liutanes Airline plane for Heuss who is ill with lung inflammation.
