Atomic blast lights desert sky in Nevada test
The Atomic Energy Commission detonated a “whispering” 15,000 to 20,000 ton TNT yield device at Yucca Flat near Angels Peak Nevada. The 10 second light show reached roughly 400 miles across San Francisco to San Diego but produced little sound, with only a faint tremor felt in Las Vegas and nearby communities. No ground damage or dust cloud was observed, and the test proceeded as a substitute for a larger planned explosion delayed by weather. Armed forces observers and aircraft monitored the event from Yucca Flat and surrounding ranges.
