Sheriff's deputies discover four blood spattered bodies of long haired youths in a forest lean-to in the Santa Cr mountains amid more than a dozen fatally injured since January. Assistant Sheriff Davis says the cause and assailants remain unknown as investigators comb the remote area. Page 3.
UCLA professor Dr Reidar Sognnaes analyzes George Washingtons dental remains and reports surprising details in Smithsonian Magazine February issue page 7 noting unusual tusk mentions and jawbone observations.
Betty Friedan says NOW will investigate evidence that the Ku Klux Klan and the John Birch Society funded opposition to the proposed equal rights amendment. She cites clues about backing for Phyllis Schlafly as NOW gears to press for ratification by August 26, the 19th amendment anniversary, at its Washington conference.
Nixon seeks labor backing for Phase II economic controls and spending limits. He aims to win Meany and union leaders over to the Republican party, shifting labor support after last year. The plan centers on olive branch diplomacy and broader GOP alignment.
President Nixon nominates L. Patrick Gray to be FBI director, seeking to formalize his post after Hoover's death. Ronald Ziegler announces also G. Bradford Cook named SEC chairman and John R. Evans chosen as SEC member. Gray, age 96, formerly Navy, joined Nixon's staff decades ago, page 9.
Wyn Sargent, a Huntington Beach sociologist, says she is too ill to discuss life among Stone Age natives. The 46 year old arrived in Hong Kong from Jakarta after being expelled from Indonesia for researching in West Irian without permission. She had been widowed and married tribal Chief Obaharok several weeks earlier.
Larry Danielson, 48, Oakland, is among a group of workers who jog daily after lunch from Elmhurst Public Works. The routine, started by Mike Hurley and continued by Paul Smith, stems from fear of aging and a wish to stay in shape. Danielson says the pace keeps him healthier and hopeful about longevity.
