In Lisbon Elizabeth and Prince Philip publicly reunite after four months apart. The smiling Queen lightly touches her husband as cameras record the moment before they travel by car to Royal Yacht Britannia for a private two day reunion off Setúbal.
Four white men assaulted and killed Edward M. Rose 36 in Boston’s South End after he objected to remarks about his relationship with Dolores Barisan Caria 26. Police say two men held Caria while two others attacked Rose, a pipe layer from East Wareham, reportedly planning marriage after her divorce. Rose died en route to Boston City Hospital. Caria previously divorced, with a long friendship of about ten years.
Attorney General Herbert Brownell Sr says he wants to release secret FBI reports to support testimony that African Americans have been deprived of voting rights in certain Southern States. He spoke to a Senate Judiciary subcommittee after Sen. Sam Ervin urged making the papers public, noting prior government refusals to release FBI materials. Brownell promised to place the documents in the committee’s public record if allowed, amid claims that those documents have been unfairly kept secret.
Lindsay Crosby, 19, youngest son of Bing Crosby, enlisted in the Army for a two year hitch and departed for basic training at Fort Ord California shortly after calling his father in Palm Springs.
SAN FRANCISCO The Democratic party finalizes a hard hitting civil rights program as old-line Southern Conservatives crumble during the opening session of a western Democratic conference. The National Advisory Council is ratified as the policy making body with a substantial agreement on the new civil rights policy. Adlai Stevenson participates in council deliberations and warns that the next six months will be decisive.
Mildred Davis president of Hayward 4 H club reports a truck load of clothing, toys, shoes, and household items donated for Russell City families. Al Bates and two volunteers delivered many items. Items were taken to Russell City School for distribution by the school nurse. The aid drive follows the February 4 fire that killed four children and destroyed two homes. Donors can contact Miss Davis at 420 Rockaway La or LA 10172 for pickup.
San Francisco promoter William Patrick Kyne, a leading figure in Western racing, died at St. Francis hospital after a long illness. He would have turned 73 next May 1. Kyne founded and operated tracks across California and the West, promoted major rides, and helped legalize pari-mutuel betting. he had a storied career from selling papers to becoming Bay Meadows general manager.
A well dressed man posing as a police officer forced two San Francisco sisters to strip before fleeing with 207 dollars from their purses. Nina Parton and Lameda, 28, reported he knocked, questioned Nina, and threatened them with a gun before taking 100 and 107 dollars and their handbags. The suspect left with the remark, "Thank you, have a nice night's sleep, ladies."
Marshal Georgi Zhukov, during a broadcast from New Delhi, said the Soviet Union plans to cut armed forces and defense spending but remains fully prepared to repulse any blow. He told All India Radio that Australia fears no threats from Western allies.

President Eisenhower has sent a note to former President Truman saying he would look with great favor on a visit by Truman to Greece and Turkey. Truman is weighing an invitation from the two countries to help celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Truman Doctrine, which provided U S dollars and military aid to resist Communism.

A Soviet paper cites experiments where dogs wore space suits and cabins to study space travel. Some were launched to as high as 70 miles and parachuted back unharmed. Examinations show no ill effects from the dogs’ space journeys.
