The White House announced a change in selective service designating non fathers under 26 as the first indents to be drafted in 1926. Officials said fathers and older men are less economical trainees, while younger non fathers are prioritized to meet current military demand.
Last minute filings closed at noon for four council and Mt Eden School District seats in area elections set for April 10. Incumbents Art Phillips and Frank R. Biggs filed again, while Mayor W. Wilson did not seek re election. Other candidates include John N. Pappas and Lilla Jodd. residents listed span Hayward Newark and San Leandro with professions from realtor to electrical contractor.
A cold air outbreak core to northern California drives freezing temperatures in Hayward and Alameda County with gusts up to 40 mph. Fire warnings issued as high winds prompt canceled permits and multiple false burglar alarms. A toppled tree cuts power in Oakland Montclair, leaving blocks without electricity for hours as weather shifts tomorrow.
Concord police hunted three bandits who used a stolen car to smash through a supermarket door and grab 200 dollars from manager Jack Smith as he tried to place cash in a safe. The car was abandoned two hours later at Avon, four miles north of Concord.
A hitchhiking spider is blamed for a westbound Hayward crash that sent a mother and her two children to hospital. Deloris Osborn, driver of the car, told CHP a spider she brushed from the windshield caused her to lean over the baby, leading to loss of control and a pole impact on Harder road. The four year old Ronald Osborn and the infant were treated for bruises and injuries. No citation issued. officers had no information on the spider’s condition.
A San Francisco girl shoplifter testified she sold expensive stolen clothing to a schoolteacher and other persons to raise money for a drug habit. Evidence emerged during county grand jury sessions as she faced charges and possible sentencing.
An Oakland tavern was robbed by a jittery young gunman who fired at two customers and escaped with 3800. Co owner Ralph Castle, 27, handed over 600, as patrons Frank Beniano, 24, and Victor O’Neil, 24, chased the bandit after he emerged from the front door. He was knocked down, fired a nonfatal shot, then fled down an alley.
Hayward residents must register by tonight for the April 10 city election. Voters may register at City Hall or at two fire stations. City Clerk Trend Jamieson says the City Hall office remains open until 9 pm for voter registration. Five council seats will be elected on the April ballot.
District 2 incumbent Joseph Bellini runs unopposed at noon. District 6 in Bonaire sees Merv Taylor, Bonaire Civic League president, entering to face James Frazier after annexation. District 4 features Gill, Bee by a, and Al Santoni vying. District 3 opens with five candidates for the seat left by Halsey Dunnigan. School board contenders for two four year terms include Oliveira, Hageman, Crew, Haycock, Landis, Vecchiarelli. for two years Jones and O Bayley. In Washington township two new cities Newark and Fremont incumbents file. Newark: Redeker, Sears, Miusin. Fremont: Bendel, Pond, Overacker Jr.
Ridgcrest Calif 1Lieut Charles Arthur Duffy 26 died when his F2H Banshee crashed at the China Lake naval ordnance test station during a simulated emergency landing. A Navy spokesman said an investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the accident.
A San Leandro chamber parking committee report outlines a long range plan to create a new commercial area with substantial parking from Washington to Clark. The block would be bought for 445000 with bonds and a safeguard assessment district to support 316 car capacity, tied to off street fees and a bonded project. The chamber also backs a March 13 school bond vote while urging limited use of funds for Lincoln School admin expansion.
President Eisenhower and Treasury Secretary George M. Humphrey set out on a quail hunt near Thomasville Georgia amid looming rain. Eisenhower, in hunting clothes, rode a mule-drawn roadster with bird dogs for a two hour search in pine and brush at the milestone plantation, his first hunt since a heart attack last September.
MILPITAS The Ford assembly plant will begin layoffs for 2330 hourly workers as inventory levels rise nationwide. A plant spokesman said orders come from back east and that the workers will be paid for 22 hours weekly during the layoff while one day shutdowns are contractually covered.
Lorenzo Columbus Howard of 138 Sixth Avenue Rus sell City is under indictment by a federal grand jury on three counts of distilling spirits illegally. Neighbors Sam Carthan and his wife Precious Jewell, with Sheriff’s Deputy Earl Smith, encountered the Howard still while pursuing runaway pigs on February 4.
A Des Moines mother Stanley Peterson and five children perished in a downtown warehouse fire. The blaze trapped a family on the second floor of a building that housed a gymnasium service club and tavern. Fire officials noted the bodies were found burned beyond recognition and the cause remained undetermined, with a witness reporting an explosion before discovery.
A 82-foot Canadian vessel the Hilunga struck a reef near Cape St James and sank in heavy seas amid a blizzard. Five crew members all Vancouver, BC, were aboard and went to lifeboats. Four rescue ships chased through one of the worst snow storms in the island region, nearest ship 25 miles away. Captain Herbert W Dale Johnson and four others are missing. the ship sent an SOS at 1 27. The Hilunga was a Public Works vessel from New Westminster.
A Washington conference of 26 mayors and city managers from cities of 50,000 plus found broad belief that President Eisenhower would run again and likely win. Of 25 surveyed by United Press, 19 expected a second term, five said no, and one was undecided. The group included 13 Democrats, 0 Republicans and two independents.
Sacramento subcommittee approved a 17.84 million dollar CHP budget for the coming year including 1.13 million for 246 new patrolmen and 12 thousand for 400 motorcycle crash helmets. The panel overrode auditor A. Alan Post’s push to delete funds for new patrolmen while backing petrol car purchases.
Deer hunters in Monroe County bagged only one deer during the hunting season. In the same month eight deer were titled pecars.
The Senate Elections subcommittee voted to investigate whether selfish interests use big money to influence congressional votes and swing elections. Chairman Albert Gore expects wide support though the full Senate and rules panel must approve. The probe follows an oil company lawyer's attempt to give 25 hundred-dollar bills to Senator Francis Case's campaign, which he rejected. A federal grand jury is also examining the incident.
In San Francisco a Bank of America teller Miss Dimubile, facing a robber who flashed a note and demanded cash, froze at the window. She claimed she had no money as the gunman demanded tens and hundreds. He hesitated, pocketed the note, and fled into the crowd.
SALEM Ore A father and his son were killed last night in a train truck crossing crash at Merion south of Salem State police reported the dead men were Edward H Carlson 48 and his son William 25 of Aums ville They were riding an empty logging truck when it collided with a Southern Pacific freight train
