Washington report notes the House interior committee approved a Hawaii Alaska statehood measure by 19 to 6 and adopted an amendment aimed at overcoming presidential objections to admitting Alaska to the union before a full house vote.
Alaska land withdrawal limit 40 percent eyed by Delegate Bartlett to ease a statehood push, while opponents warn Alaska separation fears linger. The House was set to vote a $10,000 pay raise for members, with Republican Leader Joseph Martin forecasting swift passage after a White House meeting with President Eisenhower. The measure would raise salaries from 15,000 to 25,000 for Representatives and Senators, and adjust pay for federal judges and other officials. Some members voiced misgivings about reelection implications and conscience opposed to the sizable increase.

Buyers of two acres on Castro Valley boulevard frontage declined to reveal plans for the old Castro Valley school site. Watkins Realty of San Francisco bid $100,149, the only bid, which the district attorney must approve. Trustees adjourned to Feb 21 to consider the bid and approved land appraisals for Anita Avenue replacement. bids for Center Street and Vanney schools were also noted.
Senator Margaret Chase Smith of Maine sails for Formosa and plans to visit Japan, the Philippines, and possibly Pakistan and India. The Far East trip follows her Moscow journey last fall, cut short for the Senate session. The report notes her stance on the McCarthy censure resolution.
Ashland report details a theft at Eden market where 72 pounds of coffee were stolen. Clerk Doris Cardoza, 31, told deputies the theft occurred between 2 pm and 3 pm after three cases were delivered. Police investigate the delivery bay incident at 16003 East 4th Street.
Paris reports the powerful right wing of the National Assembly, joined by Independents, rejected Christian Pineau’s bid to form a postwar government. The Independents voted 72 to 0 and Gaullists 79 to 39 against Pineau, wiping out his chances to become premier despite earlier claims of broad support.
Oakland resident D T Silver urged Alameda County supervisors to reconsider a variance and license for the San Lorenzo hog farm west of the village. He said the stink persists despite protests and a six month extension, urging officials to visit the area to witness the odor that spoils local homes.
Zone 9 Alameda Flood Control District voters rejected a 1.479 million drainage bond by 864 yes to 790 no, a little over 52 percent. Turnout was about 40 percent with 4,108 ballots cast. Board of Supervisors will canvass results and may levy assessments for drainage. San Leandro School District urged other flood control methods for John Muir Junior High.
In Bern Switzerland three anti-Red Romanians who seized the Romanian legation for over 40 hours surrendered to priests pleas and Swiss authorities. They faced extradition talks as a fourth member already surrendered and would be tried for the legation chauffeur slaying. Police warned of a possible assault with antitank guns nearby as the crisis neared a deadline.
Captain Thomas J. Pittman age 34, the third survivor of an American B-47 jet bomber crash in northern Saskatchewan, lies at Deer Lodge hospital with a broken leg and severe frostbite. Major Robert Dowdy, 31, the sole fatality, is en route to California for burial as Pittman was rescued after more than three days in sub zero cold with snow.
Authorities said a New York chauffeur who planned to kidnap Serge Rubinstein named the men who killed the millionaire draft-dodger in his Fifth Avenue mansion on January 27. Assistant District Attorney Alexander Herman told general sessions court to hold the chauffeur, Herman Scholz, 60, as a material witness on high bail as new leads were reported.
