About 1.5 million idle days stemmed from three long strikes in construction, affecting nearly half of California’s 141,000 workers in 770 strikes. the annual total was the highest since 1859 steel strike.
COLORADO SPRINGS Colo three day strike against New York newspapers may broaden to the New York Times plants in Los Angeles and Paris. ITU leader Elmer F Brown says extension depends on today’s talks with strikers local leaders. Brown notes New York publishers have sought outside help, while Cleveland presses accept a two year retroactive deal under union terms.

Martinez Contra Costa County Supervisors voted 3 to 2 to endorse an Assembly bill that would exempt half the county’s property owners from rapid transit taxes. San Francisco financier Hopps was freed on 10 000 bond pending a new trial after a four week mail fraud trial in Baltimore. A jury of seven women and five men found Hopps guilty on two counts related to mailing false financial information about International Guaranty and Insurance Co. of Tangier Morauca. He commented Thank heavens for appeal as he left with three attorneys. The government alleged Hopps ran the Tangier firm from his San Francisco office and that the Tangier firm had no real assets to insure deposits of Maryland savings and loan firms.
