Bank robbery suspects arrested in San Francisco

UPI reports John Frederick Hendrix, 34, and Kathryn Leigland, 26, arrested by MAL agents Friday on charges of robbing the Bank of America at Fort Brage on February 6. Leigland, suspected of driving the getaway car, was released on $2,000 bond. Hendrix held in bail of $25,000. The suspects were seized in a car near a downtown intersection, the FBI said.

Mystery shots fire near Pacifica on highway

Police across Pacifica and state highways searched for sources of shots that shattered nine windows on three southbound cars near Devil's Slide. Officers found no gun or shooter, noting damage suggested a powerful air rifle and shots likely fired from the seaward bushes or trees.

Union Sets Up Student Worker Shop At SFSU

The American Federation of Teachers signs a contract at San Francisco State College creating a student part time worker shop in the bookstore and cafeterias. President Sebeah Schuman says about 30 students are covered, paid 2.36 dollars per hour. The contract with the San Francisco State College Foundation, a non profit group, is among the first of its kind in the country.

Medical devices may be harmful at a drug conference

San Francisco AP reports Dr Roger Egeberg warns that some heart monitors blood purifiers and bone fixers can harm patients. He notes devices have shocked patients poisoned users and misreadings alarm. A national committee will draft safety law to protect patients without hindering progress.

Day Re-elected State Board of Education Head Without Opposition

Howard R. Day, Long Beach Insurance executive, will lead the California State Board of Education for two more years after running unopposed Thursday. Dr. Thomas G. Harwood withdrew, clearing the way for Day to continue as president amid debates on sex education, minority enrollment, and teacher tenure reforms. The three day meeting addressed minority student classification, Spanish speaking administrator shortages, and a proposal to modify tenure with four year contracts after three years.

Ecology walk planned for Ides from Sacramento to Los Angeles

Berkeley based Ecology Action announces a six week survival walk beginning March 15 to spotlight the environmental crisis. Led by Clifford Wollumphrey the event spans 13 eco festivals and passes through Stockton Modesto Merced Madera Fresno Visalia Porterville Delano Bakersfield Gorman Newhall and ends at UCLA with lectures and exhibits along the route.
