A Fremont area boiler explosion at 12 43 am destroyed a classroom at Alviso Elementary and damaged heating in another. Principal James Nunes says insurance will cover repairs taking at least a month, no injuries reported as 85 pupils remain enrolled. The blast scattered equipment, shattered a window, and stopped the boiler room clock at 12 43.
Sixty seven convicts in a single cell block staged a three hour sympathy demonstration at the New Mexico State penitentiary in Santa Fe. Guards seized fourteen ringleaders and placed them in solitary confinement after a convict set fire to a mattress during a protest over medical treatment. Warden Harold R. Swenson, in charge for less than two months, allowed the noise to continue briefly before ending the disturbance. No bloodshed occurred and only mattresses were burned.
The crane being towed on a barge hooked the lower deck of the San Francisco Oakland bridge near the San Francisco end of the bigger span, prompting a halt to Key System transbay trains. The California Highway Patrol reported some damage to the bridge.
Washington insiders report a full delegate slate for Vice President Nixon planned for California's June primary. Governor Goodwin Knight may join Nixon against Senator Knowland if President Eisenhower does not seek a second term. Louis Walters found an exquisitely worded letter of condolence attributed to Abraham Lincoln in old papers at a Beverly Hills home. The missive is said to be addressed to Lydia Bixby on her sons' deaths in the Civil War, valued at about $50,000, with Lincoln’s image on the letterhead. The owner is Diana Richardson’s descendant, John Newton, who lives at the same Beverly Hills address. The document quotes Lincoln praising the fallen sons and offering consolation from the Republic.
Auther ine Lacy, a 26 year old Birmingham Negro, who sparked rioting by enrolling at the University of Alabama, rejected a Danish university offer to study in Copenhagen. She favors re admission to Alabama despite ongoing petition and praised a Danish scholarship option from a local church group.

A 55 foot yacht Dollie Lee exploded in Oakland estuary killing potential injuries among eight aboard. Virginia Steadman 15 suffered facial burns while a 4 month old baby William Bitz was unharmed owner William Bitz and family were among those injured. The blast caused shattered glass and damage to nearby vessels at the 18th street yacht harbor around 4 30 pm.
U S Navy task force of 70 ships sails into the Pacific for a large mock landing on Iwo Jima led by Rear Admiral Irving T. Duke aboard the Mt McKinley. The exercise aims to hit Mikojima first with a Friday D Day plan and bombardment from heavy cruisers Toledo Columbus and Helena precedes the assault.
An early morning blaze at a rooming house on 32nd Street forced six families to flee their rooms in nightclothes. Two men, John Hard 35 and Jim Pashe 40, suffered burns after climbing to a second floor balcony and jumping to the ground. The fire caused about $6000 in damage, and started in the third-floor kitchen.

New Zealand detective J B Finlay fears two murder suspects among the Waitemata's crew may desert to avoid returning to New Zealand. He intercepted the freight passenger ship at Vancouver, narrowing 40 crew to two, but international complications prevent confinement aboard as security risks. The suspects are tied to the killing of Ani Vaketini, 44, a widow on Rarotonga island who tried to protect her daughter during an assault.
