Four federal marshals entered the Paulist Fathers Center chapel to arrest draft resister Paul B Couming, 22, of Dorchester. He claimed conscientious objector status but refused hospital work in lieu of duty and did not resist as around 65 supporters cheered while he was taken away.
In High Point North Carolina police and Black Panthers exchanged gunfire during an eviction of a slum house that served as a Panthers headquarters. A 47 year old policeman Lt Shaw Cooke was critically wounded. A youth Larry Medley 16 was wounded and four others Randolph Jennings 17 George DeWitt 17 and Bradford Lit ley 19 were jailed on $25000 bonds. District Court Judge Byron Haworth owned the house and said occupants rented it under false pretenses planned as a family.
Coroner Henry W. Turkel cleared San Francisco General Hospital of responsibility in the death of four month old Sabrena Coretjer. The infant died in her crib twelve hours after a resident physician advised the mother Vivian the child did not require hospitalization. Turkel called the death a typical rib illness not shown on X rays after thorough examination and sending the baby home.
Sporadic gunfire and isolated explosions punctuated a quiet Belfast night as army patrols searched streets for troublemakers. An army spokesman blamed the IRA, while Premier James Chichester Clark called the group criminals and cowards and urged Protestants to refrain from vigilante action.

U N peace envoy Gunnar Jarring reportedly sent Israel and Egypt a plan proposing Israel withdraw from the Sinai and Gaza retainment, while Tiran Strait returns to Egypt with a UN peacekeeping force. Cairo would recognize Israel and obtain permanent peace. Maariv said the plan marked a shift by Jarring from mediator to proposer, with no official confirmation. Separately Israeli sources reported an Arab guerrilla cell broken up in Tel Aviv area and cross border firefights with Lebanon and Syria, plus Jordanian army action against guerrilla positions near Amman.
