Boston AP reports Dutch ship radio operator Wil lem Van Rie 31 stands trial for alleged murder of Lynn Kauffman 23 aboard the Utrecht. A jury of seven women and five men was chosen for the murder trial of Lawrence L. Taylor Jr in San Francisco. McGulfick was found stabbed near the Klamath River on November 7. Witnesses testified after selection that Taylor had previously offered James Baker $2 to help hide the body, referring to an October 22 killing.

Lonnie Bennett, 15, admitted firing a .22 in a robbery attempt that left Rev. Leo K. Bishop, 18, wounded twice. Police seek two more suspects as Bishop and his wife Valda, 47, walked home from a neighborhood meeting. Bishop remains in fair condition.

The U S submarine Sargo broke through Arctic ice to plant a Hawaii flag at the North Pole. It followed Nautilus Skate and others in Arctic exploration, signaling persistent nuclear sub capability. Lt Cmdr John H Nicholson reported to Hawaii Governor Quinn as the mission extended its ice penetration advances.

The fires damaged an estimated 275000 dollars with sites at a paper mill church warehouse three barns and the home of Miller's mother in law Miller 25 admitted starting the fires claiming he was under compulsion and "just had to" As captain of the Minquas Fire Company he helped fight all of them.
