Four young gorillas at Toronto Zoo, in debt since opening last August, create oil and finger paintings as a fundraiser. Named Amanda, Barney, David, and Samantha, the primates mix colors with hands and feet, sometimes licking paint, while the zoo expects about 50 dollars per framed piece and plans a first come, first served sale to attract visitors.
The Daily Review earned three statewide honors at the publishers association meeting in San Francisco. It won first in typography for 15 000 to 50 000 circulation, first for photojournalism for issues Sept 15 16 and Mar 8 9, and second in human interest for Gary Tischler's June 29 profile of a 22 year old mentally retarded woman. The Argus and Tri Valley Herald also won honors. Floyd L Sparks publishes The Review Argus and Tri Valley Herald.
SACRAMENTO AP The new state director of agriculture Tim Wallace rejected a four cent hike in the price of a half gallon of milk after December hearings. The decision keeps prices at current minimums though stores may charge more. Wallace cited oversupply, lower feed costs, and higher federal supports as reasons against an increase.
Donald F. Becker, 45, longtime San Leandro police veteran, was promoted to chief replacing the late Kenneth B. Swanson who died of cancer. Becker was acting chief since Swanson's passing and will lead the department as city officials prepared to fill the vacant captain’s post.
Mrs. Jeanette Erickson of Seattle, 37, founder of the Elvis Presley Flaming Star Fan Club, says she has loved Elvis since she was 16 and would do anything for him. Surrounded by over 1,000 Presley photos, she plans a Las Vegas trip next month funded by baby-sitting earnings, after pawning her wedding rings 18 months ago to see Elvis. She met him backstage in Seattle on April 29, 1973, and recalls shaking when he kissed her.
