Two Cops Killed as Gunman Opened Fire at Oakland School
At James Madison Junior High School in Oakland two police officers, David E. Marks and John D. Branhan, were fatally shot by a rifleman who then grabbed Marks’s weapon and fired six rounds before fleeing. The gunman was wounded, captured nearby, and Branhan died en route to Highland Hospital while Marks died at Merritt Hospital. An unrelated 2 year old boy was reported shot in Oakland earlier, with fraught ties to local San Leandro and Cleveland School clashes.

Denver news reports that Joseph Simone of St. Jude Children’s Hospital says combining radiation with drug therapy may free up to half of children with leukemia. In a National Cancer Institute paper, 51 percent remained leukemia-free five years after higher radiation doses, suggesting acute lymphocytic leukemia could be curable with current treatments.
