President Eisenhower asked Congress to authorize 1.12 billion dollars over three years to back 7 billion dollars in new classroom building. He framed it as an emergency program to relieve severe overcrowding while maintaining local control of schools. Safeway Stores announces immediate nationwide price cuts of 15 cents on all three brands Edwards Nob Hill and Airway coffee. The spokesman noted some stores may see cuts greater than 15 cents in certain cases and that changes take effect immediately in all locations.
Oakland grand jury nears end of inquiry into shakedown robbery and beating charges against three officers. It will hear evidence in a case involving two inspectors accused of accepting gifts from a confessed robber. Key witness Sergeant Joseph Sim McClure alleges payoffs and threats in exchange for lessened charges.
Firefighters battled a large blaze at the Transocean Engineering building on 7807 Russell City road. Five units from Hayward Unity and Cherryland joined others to confine the fire, with Hayward Chief Matthew Timmener praising efforts that prevented spread to nearby aircraft facilities.
A two child accident resulted in the death of Kenneth Warn age unknown after a frontal fracture from a pedestrian collision with an auto Saturday in San Leandro. Another four year old Gary John Stansfield remained in serious condition after a similar crash on Langley Way near Muir School. Police identified the driver as Florence Hernandez aged 29 of Ramos Avenue. she was not cited. Funeral plans were set for the Laurel chapel of the Albert Engel company following an Alameda county coroner autopsy.
