Sacramento Governor Knight proposes authorizing a cigarette tax increase and a beer levy rise to fund California schools. The plan, backed by the California Teachers Association, would raise about 74 million dollars annually. Legislation awaits legislative action when the body reconvenes in March.
Government investigator testified that a California air collision involved a jet fighter turning into a Douglas transport. Civil Aeronautics Board Director Oscar Bakke said the planes should have seen each other for about one minute before impact as eight were killed and 20 injured in related crashes.
