Washington AP reports Americans face rising prices and higher unemployment until mid year. Pacific Gas & Electric asks the California Public Utilities Commission for a 156 million dollar annual increase in natural gas rates. The move comes ahead of a hearing on a broader 233 million dollar general rate rise, with 159 million for electric rates and 74 million for gas. If approved, typical monthly bills would rise by about 1.23 dollars for gas and 2.13 dollars for electric. SACRAMENTO AP The Assembly narrowly approved a measure to create a state run lottery with an estimated 178 million dollars in annual revenue. Opponents warned of crime and harm to families while supporters framed it as a painless way to boost state funding. The constitutional amendment, SCA18 by Leon Ralph, would allow a state lottery if profits fund the public good, and moves to the Senate for possible voter approval in November.
California officials announced President Nixon is not a state resident for tax purposes based on White House records. They caution he may owe some California income taxes for 1969 to 1973, depending on further rulings about income sourced in California. The Nixons’ time at San Clemente influenced the decision, with a later ruling expected on tax liability.
