Newark Council rejects bid to meet public outside city hall
Newark City Council defeated by a 3 to 2 vote a bid by Councilwoman Shirley Sisk to hold every two months “people meetings” away from City Hall and consider a Newark human relations commission. Opponents Mayor James Balentine and Councilmen Harry Lewis and Robert Plowright urged staying in City Hall and noted prior failed similar experiments. A staff report only was approved on the commission idea, with Sisk and Councilman Cortez offering limited backing after heated debate. The meeting also approved a $37,500 cash bond plan for K-marg improvements, a recycling center, and a unified transit proposal with regional agencies.

BART to sell site for dental school by UNLON CITY
The University of the Pacific School of Dentistry plans to buy an excess half acre of BART land to build a dental clinic at 12th Street between F and J, with final approval by the BART board. The $27,500 irregularly shaped parcel sits adjacent to Kennedy Community Center and will host low cost patient care and local hires. The project, funded by a federal grant from the National Institute of Mental Health, aims to train senior dental students under licensed practitioners and may partner with South County junior colleges for dental hygiene training. The site was bought in 1965 for $33,488 and was unused due to project redesigns.
