Water plant purchase approved by Avarea County district
Avarea County Water District directors approved buying about 10 acres southwest of the Interstate 60-Vargas Road interchange for the Mission San Jose Water Treatment Plant. The $52,600 land purchase from Mr. and Mrs. David Escobar will be paid in four installments for tax advantages, with the district earning 6 percent on unpaid balance but paying 1 percent interest. The plant, expected by 1976, aims to cut operating costs by about $1.25 million and reduce reliance on Hetch Hetchy and Tehama water by sourcing cheaper South Bay water. Construction of the $2.3 million facility is planned for next March, with six projects proposed in phase one.
