Guest editorial notes AMES Iowa researchers funded by EPA and Rockefeller Foundation explore electron beam melting and vacuum induction melting to purify recycled steel from junked cars. With only 27 years of iron resources left, reclaiming 22 tons of steel per minute could delay price rises and reduce auto graveyards while advancing nuclear and space program byproducts into general use.
James J. Kilpatrick criticizes the Senate for repealing the Byrd amendment on Rhodesian chrome, calling the move hypocritical and expedient. He cites Sen. Byrd and Byrd-era policy, critiques Adlai Stevenson and Sen. McGee, and warns that the decision undermines morality, harms U.S. steel and defense industries, and signals weakness to the world.
California's new State Energy Coordinator Wes Bruer, formerly State Geologist, explains how federal price controls and complex allocations choke petroleum supplies. He urges removing controls in six months to let market forces set priorities and restore readiness.
Guest opinion by Henry Huglin reflects on the Vietnam War after one year of disengagement. He credits bombing and subsequent political stability in South Vietnam, cites Thieu's leadership, and argues U S involvement helped deter Hanoi, stabilized the region, and bolstered global credibility with ripple effects toward Middle East peace and enduring world order.
Letters respond to Ronald Raso about higher density plans in Hayward hills including Challenge Highlands and Parkside. The Challenge Highlands Homeowners Association says it has not taken a position and did not invite proponents to present. Members were courteous to Mr Basso but no petitions were circulated at the meeting. The association supports open discussion and reconstruction of Hayward Boulevard, with homeowners contributing to funding, and clarifies it has not endorsed or opposed the high density proposal.
In appreciation the writer thanks the person who witnessed a Friday December 14 auto accident at C and Main Hayward for testifying to police. Gratitude also to Hayward fire station for aiding the passenger with oxygen and saving the man’s life during the incident.
