Faulty switch kills two near plane crash wreck
A Northern Pacific freight train derailed at Basseil Junction 18 miles south of Moses Lake Washington after striking a faulty switch in a blizzard. Engineer Harold Cunningham and fireman Sack V Dimmitt were killed. brakeman George A Shattuck 21 was pinned in the wreckage nine hours. Telegraph operator LM Mathis helped halt the train and rescue crews worked through snow to reach survivors. The train was en route from Wheeler to Pasco with five cars for Toppenish refinery when the 26 car consist left the rails, injuring others and leaving eight cars overturned. The crash came close to a different fatal air crash site where a Globemaster was lost Saturday.
