Swedish guests find American Christmas warmer and busier
Leif Bonham and Johan Wallgren, Swedish exchange students aged 17 and 18, live with host Leonard Passafiume in Castro Valley. They compare Christmas customs, noting Sweden’s Festival of Light on December 13 and family gatherings through January 13, with Sweden’s lighter holiday pace and more limited school sports. They describe American turkey dinners, eggnog, and Santa Claus, while praising Canyon High activities and their host family's hospitality. The students hope to study abroad further, with plans to pursue college and possible careers in medicine, law, or economics. They arrived via the Student International Service program connecting Castro Valley and Sweden.
