California Flood Emergency Spreads Toward Santa Cruz

A state of emergency was declared by Gov. Godwin J. Knight as northern California faced vast flooding. Santa Cruz reported 12 missing at a beach resort while the San Lorenzo River isolation crippled the city. The town’s population stood at 15,090 this morning and eight missing were feared swept away. Teletypes indicated aid must come by airlift. streets flooded five feet deep, power cut for five hours, and a bridge washed out near Watsonville. Marysville, south of Sacramento, evacuated as a levee threat loomed.
