Heroic Fremont motorist pulls drowning driver from creek

James Stevenson stopped after a traffic crash where a car toppled into Alameda Creek on Niles Canyon Road. He waded through four feet of water to free Kenneth Wilgon, 18, of Livermore, who was pinned in the overturned vehicle and in critical condition at Washington Hospital with head injuries. A second motorist refused aid claiming risk to his shoes. Stevenson, 35477 Alde Court, Fremont, said he had been returning from a San Francisco Christmas party when he witnessed the wreck and helped despite slippery embankments and cold water.

Doll in the rain infant found dead near Pleasanton

Two Pleasanton youths discovered an unidentified newborn girl with the umbilical cord attached lying in the rain on Bernal Avenue. No visible wounds noted. autopsy to determine cause of death. Sheriff Lt. Morris Hickerson said the case is under investigation.

Electric road signs test on Santa Monica Freeway

Los Angeles reports that 35 electric signs will be installed on the Santa Monica free way next July to flash traffic information rather than sports messages. The system links to an 8 million sensor network over 42 miles across Santa Monica San Diego and Harbor freeways to monitor flow and bottlenecks and a radio system will broadcast updates to motorists. Officials say early results show faster accident detection and ramp metering improvements but a month is insufficient for long term conclusions.
