An Air Force Titan 3C rocket launched four piggyback satellites including a space falcon and a sun watcher aboard the year’s bold unmanned mission. The triple barreled booster, the most powerful U.S. rocket yet flown, lifted off on time at 6 am Pacific.
Saigon reports UPI that U S and allied aircraft bombed the vital Vong Bi coal burning power plant near Haiphong for the second time. Five planes were shot down and five crewmen feared killed in the North Viet Nam raid as SAMs and Soviet missiles engaged the attackers. The operation followed earlier strikes last Friday and Monday, part of a major escalation in the war with several aircraft losses totaling seven planes and seven fliers.
Assemblyman Carlos Bee and Assemblyman Robert Crown, both linked to Unruh succession, press their bids while Unruh warns against premature campaigning for the speakership. Bee says he would seek the post if Unruh leaves, but would support him if he stays, framing early pledges as a personal affront. Continued details on page 2.
Fremont Unified School District moved to secure 170 046 dollars in federal Title 1 funds to support a six month plan aiding low income students. At a special meeting the board approved the application, with President M D Sabraw urging the superintendent to proceed.
San Lorenzo Unified School District seeks federal funds to launch a $250000 special learning program for about 1000 disadvantaged students. Supt Paul Ehret says centers will be in local schools from elementary through high, focusing on reading language mathematics arts music health and civic skills with specialists assigned to each center.
A Parks site spokesman disputes a San Francisco paper claim that Camp Parks was named a top site for a giant accelerator. Officials from Alameda County and Berkeley AEC researchers say no decision has been made among 85 sites. The academy may announce recommendations next month with final AEC action to follow.
MOSCOW UPI Tass reports the Soviet Union launched the first Cosmos satellite. It was placed in an elliptical orbit from about 161 to 41 miles up, with monitors processing data received from the craft.
Lrayr Terzian 45, Alameda County assistant chief probation officer, was named welfare director by unanimous Board of Supervisors. Starting pay 18600 annually, top 21000, effective January. Terzian, native of Turkey raised in Alameda, is married to Nell and has three sons. He succeeds Harold Kehoe who retires February 1. Wesley Slade, executive director of the Alameda County Human Relations Commission, resigns after four months to take a higher paying post in San Francisco.
