City Officials Await Ruling On Council Election Challenge

Hayward officials expect a ruling next month in a dispute over the traditional ballot order for incumbents. City Attorney John Scanlon said briefs were filed Tuesday with Superior Court Judge Lewis Lerçara who promised a mid January decision. The case, filed after the 1972 election by Howard C. McDaniel, questions whether incumbents should top ballots and could affect April ballots. The city has until December 28 to respond and January 4 to rebuttal arguments. A further court appearance seems unlikely unless requested by the judge.

College President Stephen Epler and Business Manager Allen Frawley cite need for legislative relief, noting district wealth from property taxes compounds funding gaps.

Developer balks at extra costs in subdivision build

Ronald Harrison of Golden State Homes complains about mustering 88 feet of sidewalk, curb, and gutter on land owned by flood control and Southern Pacific. He says the 8?-home project south of Mirabeau Drive and Haley Street would face higher costs as he absorbs security, landscaping, a pool, and underground utilities, with sidewalk price around 75 dollars per foot.
