Lyons, a longtime Democrat turned Republican, surprised observers with his near-match despite policy differences.
In Colusa County and surrounding areas schools closed as a respiratory illness prompted by local health officials. About 161 of 500 high and graduate students stayed home while the public health department noted thousands of California pupils ill in the past month. Dr. Malcolm H. Merrill said the illness resembles flu but is not flu.
A 16 year old Everett Kelley lay in critical condition at Wasthoe Medical Center after a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Plumas County sheriff said Kelley shot himself in a revenge following a breakup with a girl who spurned him after an auto accident two years ago.
Detroit was surprised with a Christmas gift totaling 5.00 from the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The gift came from a larger 25 000 appropriation aimed at financing the VFW national convention in August 1960. The convention cost 200 999 with a 45 000 surplus, which was redirected to Detroit.
