Forecasters also predicted rain in the Bay Area with lingering effects into Wednesday while other regions showed a mix of above and below normal readings across the country.

Madeira jetliner crash near Funchal kills at least 19
A Swiss chartered Caravelle with 32 passengers and five crew overshot the runway at Funchal Airport and plunged into the Atlantic. Nineteen bodies recovered, 21 survivors saved as searchers scoured the sea and harbor for missing passengers. Police said most survivors were Swiss. authorities continued to search for others as islanders watched from shore.
