Rescue boats patrolled the rain swollen river at Point Pleasant West Virginia in a search for about 80 additional victims after the collapse of a steel suspension bridge. Five bodies were recovered and about 18 injured survivors remained in area hospitals. Divers and derrick boats prepared to operate as rescuers described vehicles trapped in the icy water and up to 60 feet deep in the Kanawha River channel. The bridge linking West Virginia and Ohio collapsed during heavy commuter traffic just days before a new toll-free river bridge was to open upriver.

Three Die In Separate Bay Area Vehicle Crashes
A Castro Valley man and his 1 year old daughter died in a multivehicle crash on Interstate 606 near Pleasant Hill. A Fremont man died in a three vehicle crash on Mission Boulevard in Hayward. Hayward police identified Alexander Gerace 24 of 41783 Sherwood Street and William S Jones 44 of 20028 William Avenue as victims. A third fatality was the loss of Deena Christine Jones age unknown. One more driver Leo Dedoh rysan 44 of Union City sustained minor injuries. Warren R McDonald 22 of 1828 Street also injured in an accident involving a motorcycle and a car on East 14th Street and Blossom Way. All details pending investigation.
