The Navy launched its first Polaris submarine missile after dark from Cape Canaveral, with the second stage firing on schedule but the overall test described as only partially successful. The night launch aimed to help optical tracking needs for future solid-fuel missiles and informed plans for Polaris readiness aboard submarines in 1960 with about 1,200 miles initial range.

They were cellmates at Ohio Penitentiary where Bancroft was in for grand larceny and Sopke for armed robbery. Released months apart they worked as gravediggers at Calvary Cemetery. They were jailed again on charges of armed robbery of a beer carrier.
