Area rain totals up more needed

Rains yesterday and overnight brought as much as 1.64 inches of precipitation to Alameda County, with totals above seasonal norms in parts of the area. Snow was light in the Sierra, leaving the Gren Lake snowpack at roughly 21 inches, about 5 percent of normal for this time. East Bay Municipal Utility District officials say the rain did little to improve the water situation. Readings show 0.61 inch at Hayward, 1.28 inches at Pleasanton, and 0.11 inch in the East Oakland hills, with 7.29 inches of rain this season at Upper San Leandro Reservoir, 108 percent of its normal 6.7 inches. Castro Valley totals are around 5.65 inches, 102 percent of normal 5.53 inches. Other South County stations sit 6–7 inches, but the rains have not persisted enough to replenish reservoirs.
