Students Protests Spur Burmese Government Crisis
Pro communist student agitators staged antigovernment demonstrations at Rangoon Mandalay and Moulmein as well as several smaller colleges. Opposition to Ne Win is weak without unity, with only a small number of Rangoon activists linked to insurgents. The mass rally followed classes and a workers gathering, as violence in 1982 left 16 dead at Rahgoon University and guerrilla war resumes. Insurgents include Reds with Keren and Shao tribesmen, totaling several thousands, using hit and run tactics against Rangoon authority.
