In San Leandro an elderly couple, Bradford K. Melville and Mabel Yvonne Melville, died by cyanide within their apartment after sending a letter to the coroner stating they would be dead. A second note explained the wife’s incurable cancer and the husband’s wish not to be left alone. A canister of sodium cyanide was found in the bedroom. funeral arrangements were left to C. P. Bannon mortuaries in Oakland.

Five Boys Safe After Night On Mount Diablo
Five boys were found safe at their Concord homes after twelve hours stranded on Mount Diablo. The youths Richard Bennett 16 Walter Bennett Jr 15 and Jerry 16 Jack 13 William 11 camped near the 4000 foot peak then wandered until reaching a ranger station at the 2100 foot level about 3 p.m. Park Ranger George Thornton alerted their parents who had launched a sheriff's search. The boys kept warm around a campfire during their long twilight vigil and said they were not scared.

Gay Shop Burglary Reported In Hayward

Sunday Crashes and Fires Cost Weekend Toll
Hayward police and California Highway Patrol reported six traffic accidents Sunday, far below normal, with no serious injuries. One pedestrian, Gerald Henry Reilly, 53, was struck on Foothill Boulevard by a turning car driven by Hubert Wayne Kirkland, 33, and treated for minor injuries. Another driver, Jose Manuel Valdez, 46, sustained facial lacerations after veering off Niles Highway into a tree. Three fires caused about 670 dollars in damages, including a mattress fire on Ormand Avenue, a 1949 sedan fire on ONeil road, and a car fire on By and Castro from faulty wiring.
