In Hayward a tentative settlement was reached between the city and Local 390 of the United Public Employees Union after a one day strike by about 30 members. Details remain undisclosed as a city council briefing was planned and votes were scheduled for 7 tonight.
United Press reports a Gallup poll shows Ronald Reagan ahead of Gerald Ford among Republican and independent voters for the GOP nomination. Ford remains confident of winning a full term in 1978, with Reagan favored by 57 percent of Republicans and Ford by 43 percent in that group. Ford trails Reagan among independents, though the White House stresses the only poll that counts is Election Day.
Sara Jane Moore, 45, told U.S. District Judge Conti she willingly attempted to murder President Ford with a handgun outside the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco on Sept. 22. She said she has made peace with her conscience as her plea changed against her lawyer’s wishes. A psychiatrist will be consulted to assess her competence before Tuesday’s trial start.
George Moscone a 46 year old Democratic State Senator and city civil servants favorite won the San Francisco mayoral runoff over Supervisor John Barbagelata with a final tally of 141,000 to 97,133. Moscone backed binding arbitration in public labor disputes and pledged better wages and housing for minority groups.
A pre-dawn fire at a five story Mission District apartment house on 16th and Valencia streets killed at least eight people and injured 14 including many firefighters. Firefighters used ladder-rescue gear to save dozens as flames and smoke poured from windows. A rescue center opened at a nearby church. Cause unknown. witness said the blaze started rapidly and exploded through the structure amid reports of arson in the neighborhood. Relief centers and emergency hospital care were established for displaced residents and those treated for smoke inhalation and burns. Six bodies were recovered with more feared in the wreckage as crews battled collapsing floors and burning timbers. about 200 firefighters responded.
In San Leandro opponents of Oakland Scavenger Co. won a postponement after the planning commission found the advertising of last night’s hearing inadequate. Hearing delayed to Jan 29 with no other items on the agenda. Audrey Albers pointed out the missing time detail in the notice, prompting the extension.
A German newspaper reports Fremont as a world famous den of vice sparked by the Denise nte ives Irvington massage battle. It recalls “200 jealous wives” marching on treatment rooms and picketers jotting license numbers. The piece notes massaged parlors and “red lit” rumors spreading globally.
