Expert counters S F reputation on drinking in San Francisco
UC Berkeley public health lecturer Robin Room says San Franciscans drink less per capita than the city’s image suggests. A 10-year UC study of 1,268 San Franciscans vs 2,746 other Americans finds similar drinking levels. tourism and suburban visitors inflate the city’s apparent booze culture. Club owner Tony Burges supports the view that out-of-towners skew impressions of local drinking. The coroner's office thoroughness also shapes perceptions of cirrhosis rates in the city.

Property tax relief not quite so evident
In Sacramento the AP reports California homeowners will still pay about five times what they did a decade ago despite Reagan Moretti tax relief. The Board of Equalization notes average home value around 6 000 with tax rate up to 11 85 and an average tax of 711 with 39 savings from the 750 homeowners exemption. If the plan works, bills would drop near 500 dollars, and local tax rate increases would require voter approval under a population inflation rule.
